Speaker Biographies
Anthony Warn
Anthony Warn has over sixteen years of experience working in culturally and linguistically diverse elementary and middle schools, including five years as a school administrator in the New York City public schools. Fully bilingual in Spanish, Anthony has many years of experience working to support the education of ELLs and brings to his work a passion for including the full range of artistic experiences to the work of curriculum design and instruction.
Avis Williams
Avis Williams, principal of Williams Middle School in Huntsville, AL, has served in leadership positions in the military, as an entrepreneur and now as an instructional leader. She received her B.S. in education from Athens State University with certifications in English and Physical Education. She began her teaching career at a Title I high school in Huntsville City Schools in 1998 where she taught English, PE and coached the dance and track teams. She then transferred to a middle school in Madison, AL where she taught English for two years and served as assistant principal for three. More recently, she served as an elementary principal in a Title I school for three years and has been in current position since July of 2009. Dr. Williams received her Educational Doctorate from the University of Alabama. She serves as President of the Schools Foundation’s Educators Institute, as a representative on the Policy Council for Head Start’s Community Action Partnership, the HEALS Clinic executive board of directors, and is a member and presenter for the Faith Council for Poverty and Public Policy. Dr. Williams is a graduate of Huntsville/Madison County Leadership Connect Class 4 and Impact Class 2. Her spare time is spent being a “cheer mom” to her daughter Briahna, working with youth activities at her church (Church Street Cumberland Presbyterian Church), public speaking and training for half-marathons.
Ben Shuldiner
Ben graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in History and Science. He earned his Master's degree in Education Administration from Baruch City College while teaching at Erasmus Hall, a troubled, inner-city high school. In 2002, Ben received a grant to build a high school that better reflected his vision of a fair public education system. Ben's innovative ideas for public education became reality in the fall of 2003, when he opened the High School for Public Service in Brooklyn. When the school opened, Ben became the youngest public high school principal in the state of New York. Ben was recently chosen from a nationwide pool as the recipient of the prestigious Jefferson Award, “Greatest Public Service by an Individual 35 Years or Under.”
Bruce Henecker
Bruce Henecker is a "geek" (in the best possible sense of the word), a classroom teacher, and a teacher trainer in the Jersey City Public Schools. He is an early adopter of Web 2.0 technologies and has conducted extensive research in the use of these technologies for writing instruction, collaboration, and curriculum development.
Cameron Evans
As the first national technology officer (NTO) and chief technology officer (CTO) of Microsoft Education, Cameron Evans is responsible for shaping and executing Microsoft Corp.’s technology and policy strategy in U.S. Education. Evans chairs Microsoft’s Higher Education Advisory Group and K12 Advisory Group for connecting customer insights into Microsoft’s industry engagement. As Microsoft’s Education CTO, Evans focuses his work principally on large, complex and strategic innovation for public and private schools in K–12 and higher education, museums, libraries, research universities, and academic medical centers across the nation.
Evans is a member of Microsoft’s Education Leadership Team and is the national spokesperson for institutional innovation and transformation. Before he was named NTO and CTO in July 2009, Evans was the group sales manager for Microsoft Higher Education.
Since joining Microsoft in January 2004, Evans has served in a variety of positions, including managing the development and sales execution of account executives, technical sales specialists, industry solutions professionals, and Microsoft Certified Partners. In addition, Evans has served as the Microsoft liaison for the Schools Interoperability Framework Association. Evans continues to keynote industry conferences to connect Microsoft’s broad global and education vision with meaningful, real-world transformation.
Before joining Microsoft, Evans was a K–12 chief information officer and cabinet-level executive. Evans is a U.S. Air Force veteran. He holds a bachelor’s degree in management-computer information systems from Park University. In addition, Evans is currently completing his MBA at the University of Texas at Dallas. He enjoys songwriting and producing music, eating dessert first, and travelling internationally with his wife and daughter.

Dr. Carl Swartz
Dr. Swartz works with colleagues to develop and test the impact of educational technology on growth in reading and writing ability. He has co-authored articles about the assessment of writing and writing disorders in journals such as The Journal of Learning Disabilities, Developmental Neuropsychology, and Educational Psychologist. He has also co-authored chapters about learning and writing disorders for edited books. A former educator, Dr. Swartz has 30 years of experience in teaching and research, focusing primarily on learning differences. In addition to his corporate work, Dr. Swartz has served higher education as a research scientist in the School of Medicine and clinical assistant professor in the School of Education at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his undergraduate degree in education from Indiana University, and his master’s and doctorate degrees in education from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Swartz taught early adolescents with severe emotional disturbances and behavior disorders at a middle school in Greenville, South Carolina (1983-1986).
Deb Bannon
Debra Bannon is president of Learning Plus Inc., an education consulting firm. Over the last 22 years Deb has worked in education in many roles, including fourth grade teacher, school technology leader, and consultant. She received her Masters degree from Purdue University. Deb has consulted with K-12 schools developing workshops in the areas of technology integration in Standards-based classroom, 6+1 Writing Traits, PBL, and data. She has been a certified consultant with Collaborative Learning since 2005.
Debra Synatschk
Debra Synatschk is an Education Consultant with Collaborative Learning. Formerly, she was the Curriculum Director K-12 at Greenwood ISD in Midland, Texas. She was an adjunct professor for Midland College and taught Dual Credit American history to the students of Greenwood High School. During her 28 years in education, Debra has taught 5th-11th grade history, math, and reading, as well as gifted and talented classes. Debra began the mapping process seven years ago with her former school district. After much research, she chose the Curriculum Mapper as the tool her district would use to map. They have mapped all core classes PreK-12 as well as electives. She brings the perspective of someone who has seen her school through the mapping process as well as working with schools for Collaborative Learning over the past three years.

Eunice Jackson
Eunice Jackson- is a retired high school science teacher and technology coordinator. Eunice is currently teaching online teacher-education courses at Bowling Green State University, and serves as software training consultant. Eunice has worked with teacher training in various capacities for 15 years, including training in various types of hardware and software, computing skills, differentiated instructional strategies, technology integration into existing curricula, and curriculum development.
Glenda Pierce
Grant Wiggins
Grant Wiggins is co-author of the award winning Understanding by Design the highly successful book written with Jay McTighe and is currently the President of Authentic Education in Hopewell, New Jersey. He earned his Ed.D. from Harvard University and his B.A. from St. John’s College in Annapolis. Grant consults with schools, districts and state education departments on a variety of reform matters; organizes conferences and workshops; and develops print materials and Web resources on curricular change.
Over the past twenty years, Grant has worked on some of the most influential reform initiatives in the country, including Vermont’s portfolio system and Ted Sizer’s Coalition of Essential Schools. He has established statewide Consortia devoted to assessment reform for the states of North Carolina and New Jersey. Grant is the author of Educative Assessment and Assessing Student Performance, both published by Jossey-Bass. His many articles have appeared in such journals as Educational Leadership and Phi Delta Kappan.
Janet Rummel
Janet Rummel, Certified Consultant, is a 13-year veteran teacher who brings experience in leading instruction planning, curriculum mapping, and standards-based grading initiatives in her district and in districts nation-wide. A doctoral candidate in Curriculum and Instruction at Purdue University, she also coordinates and teaches multicultural education to prospective teachers and supervises student teachers of secondary mathematics.
Jeff Garthwaite
Jeff Garthwaite served as a classroom teacher beginning in 1971. He taught a variety of social studies subjects at the middle school level. Mr. Garthwaite has been a school based administrative leader for over twenty years working as assistant principal and principal at the middle and elementary school levels. He has been an educational consultant in many state school systems providing resources to high school and middle school principals and teachers regarding a variety of instructional and administrative topics. Mr. Garthwaite has also worked in the Alternative Education Department of his local school system, providing transitional services to students involved with the Department of Juvenile Justice. He is currently working in his county school system within the Title I Department coordinating stimulus programs through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Joshua Ruland
Joshua Ruland is the Director of Curriculum and Assessment at Manteno School District in Illinois. He previous teaching experience includes middle school language arts and social studies and high school English. He has taught in both a small rural school and a large suburban school settings. He holds Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and English and a Masters of Education from the University of St. Francis, Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration from Loyola University, and is currently a Doctoral Candidate in Curriculum and Instruction from Loyola with his dissertation on Formative Assessment and Student Involvement.
Kevin Baird
Kevin Baird began his career as a technology teacher, working with adult and alternative degree students to improve career readiness skills. Later representing Native American governments, he created education policy, presented to state and federal lawmakers, and helped to secure critical funding for education and health programs for rural populations. He is the founder and former Executive Director of several non-profit organizations focused on education, health care and the arts.
A leader in educational publishing, Mr. Baird served as Vice President with Renaissance Learning, publishers of Accelerated Reader, and as Vice President with Achieve3000, publishers of KidBiz3000 and TeenBiz3000, before building a successful media joint venture with the Chinese government. In those capacities, he led hundreds of educational consultants worldwide, has worked with schools on every continent excluding Antarctica, and has participated in some of the largest research studies in education ever conducted in reading, mathematics, and effective school leadership.
Today, Mr. Baird serves in a variety of education related posts through EdLead, his education fund and support organization. Kevin holds degrees in Sociology and Anthropology, holds an MBA in Global Management, is a Beinecke National Scholar, a Wingspread Scholar, and a member of the Secretary’s Circle of Phi Beta Kappa. He is a founder of the Curriculum Improvement Institute and a regular speaker and consultant working with schools and districts to create effective school management systems and processes. Mr. Baird lives with his spouse and three children outside of Chicago.
Kim Brunswick
Kim Brunswick has worked with schools in their quest for school improvement and professional development needs for the past eight years, specializing in the implementation of standards-based grading. Prior to joining the consultant field she was a classroom teacher for nearly twenty years.
Kim Brunswick has been with Collaborative learning for over five years.
Larry Hahn
Larry Hahn has been an educator since 1982. One of his earlier accomplishments included becoming the youngest principal in Texas at the age of 24. Larry lead the way in helping to raise student achievement throughout the 13 years as a school administrator. This included a remarkable increase of test scores of 32% in reading in just two years time.
Over the past twelve years Larry has trained and helped motivate thousands of educators in ways to improve teaching and learning including using the power of data to impact student results.
Using his educational experiences, he speaks to audiences about how to make a difference in the lives of children, learning, and helping educators focus “what works.”
He is the President of Leadership Infusion, Inc., a consulting company, dedicated to training and motivating school leaders to “Step Up and Lead” in their organizations.
LaVonna Roth
LaVonna Roth is an experienced educational consultant, trainer and mentor to school districts. She shares successful and effective best practices during her presentations that address all content areas and grade levels. Her practical strategies and best practices are founded upon research and years of classroom experience that enable teachers to educate and engage their students more effectively. Her workshops are centered around her specialization- engaging the brain! LaVonna has a Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Master's in the Art of Teaching, and a Master's in Educational Leadership. She has been recognized by the Florida Council for Social Studies for Teacher of the Year, Hillsborough County Semi-Finalist for Teacher of the Year and selected by the Florida Department of Education as a Mentor Teacher.

Leslie Noonan, a former teacher and education consultant, has developed and presented a variety of curriculum and technology workshops for K-12 audiences throughout the United States. In 2003, Leslie expanded her consulting work to become a certified Curriculum Mapper® consultant, and later joined Collaborative Learning Inc. full-time as Senior Education Consultant.

Lori Storer is currently a principal in Carmel, Indiana. She graduated from Bowling Green State University (OH) with a Bachelor of Science in Special Education and General Education. Lori taught students in grades 1-5 and 9-12 in general education, special education, and gifted & talented education before receiving a Master’s Degree in Administration from Ball State University. She is beginning her 10th year as an administrator and has had the honor of working alongside teachers and students in both urban and suburban schools. The journey called school improvement is what entices, engages, and drives Lori’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to provide the foundation for academic success for the students she serves.

Mari Pearlman
Dr. Mari Pearlman is currently Senior Vice President for the Education at Catapult Learning, Inc, the nation’s leading provider of Title I, Title IIA, and Title III services to private and parochial schools. She is also the founder and principal of the Pearlman Education Group. In the latter role, Dr. Pearlman has assisted a broad range of education organizations in fulfilling their missions, using her experience in not-for-profit executive management, educational measurement, and teacher professional development. She has provided both for-profit and not-for profit education organizations with strategy analysis and advising, market analysis, partnering advice and support, assessment and evaluation design. Dr. Pearlman’s professional experience has led to her particular interest in the application in the education arena of frameworks, analytical tools, and disciplines common to effective for-profit businesses. She has particular expertise in analysis of the fit between strategy and fiscal decision-making, design and leadership of team-based new product development, market analysis, organizational management strategies, and the creation and leadership of training for negotiation inside organizations.
Dr. Marie Alcock
Dr. Marie Alcock Marie Alcock PhD has been an educator and administrator in both public and private schools for the past twelve years. She met Heidi Hayes Jacobs in 1999 when she was the curriculum coordinator of a school exploring the idea of curriculum mapping. Marie led her school through the mapping process including the introduction of Web-based technology and the exploration of the advanced mapping techniques. Marie currently teaches the Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Master's program for Walden University. She is working with schools nationally as an educational consultant helping private, parochial, independent, and public schools through the mapping process. Most recently she has been invited as an education research ambassador to China.
Mark Truitt
Mark R. Truitt A former Administrator of the Year in Miami-Dade County Mark has been a middle school, high school, and virtual school principal. He has been involved in curriculum improvement and mapping throughout the country for more than 15 years. He has orchestrated the opening and the crafting of curriculum for traditional brick and mortar schools as well as virtual schools in the public, private and charter arena. A national consultant for the College Board he has also mentored low performing high schools for the state of Florida. Additionally Mark monitors and teaches future educators for Florida Atlantic University. A past executive board member of the Coalition of Essential Schools Florida he has assessed math and language arts curriculum, its delivery and articulation for schools throughout the United States.
Dr. Michael Rush
Michael Rush has served schools for more than 30 years as both a teacher and consultant. He has worked closely with expert educators, including Heidi Hayes Jacobs. He has traveled extensively helping school leaders better understand the operational curricula within their schools. Mr. Rush is experienced in Understanding by Design, Differentiated Instruction, and Project-Based Learning.
Muriel Summers
Muriel Thomas Summers is first of all, a teacher. Recognized in 2001 as Wake County's Principal of the Year, she has presented at national, state and local conferences and consults with schools across the United States.
Using Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Edwards Deming's Profound Knowledge as the foundation of their leadership model, Muriel and her staff have created the first leadership elementary school in the nation. During her eleven year tenure at A. B. Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School, she has guided her school in receiving numerous awards.

Dr. Peg Portscheller
Peg Portscheller, past Educator of the Year and Superintendent of the Year, brings real-world experience to leading curriculum improvement initiatives. For 15 years, she served on the board of the Mid-continent Regional Educational Laboratory (McREL) and is currently a consultant with Focused Leadership Solutions. She has worked with Doug Reeves as the Chief Learning Officer for the Leadership and Learning Center, and has served as a union leader, teacher, and school administrator.
Peg offers educators pragmatic and “doable” strategies for getting teachers, unions, and school leaders moving.
Robert W. Mischel
Bob Mischel's background as a certified public accountant in the United States for 22 years afforded him the opportunity to work with some of the finest entrepreneurs in the world, including Gary Gannaway. In July 1997, Bob joined Gannaway and The Gannaway Group as its President. Presently, as CFO, COO and Vice Chairman of the Board, Bob is responsible for managing the day-to-day and finance operations of WorldNow, a Gannaway Group Company. In addition to overseeing all department heads, Bob specializes in shaping the company's strategic direction and managing the financial outlook to ensure WorldNow is profitable.
Prior to joining WorldNow, Bob was the founding and managing partner of Mischel, Martini, Iosue & Akpovi, Certified Public Accountants, located in Los Angeles, California. Bob specialized in working with high growth companies, both in and outside of the media industry. With his strategic guidance, many of these companies began as start-ups and grew into highly profitable entities and either continued to expand or successfully executed on very profitable exit strategies.
Bob earned his bachelor's degree in business administration with an emphasis in accounting from the California State University at Northridge.
Dr. Rolf Blank
ROLF K. BLANK is Director of Education Indicators at the Council of Chief State School Officers. At CCSSO he is responsible for developing, managing, and reporting a system of state-by-state and national indicators of the condition and quality of education in public schools. For the past decade, Dr. Blank has led two multi-state collaborative projects involving state education leaders, curriculum specialists, assessment directors, and evaluators, including a 28-state collaborative project on Accountability Systems and Reporting, and an 18-state collaborative project focused on developing and implementing Surveys of Enacted Curriculum, a set of in-depth, high quality online data collection and reporting tools now being used by in twenty states and by 10,000 teachers per year for curriculum and instructional improvement, alignment analysis, and analyzing needs and trends over time. In his Council leadership role, Dr. Blank collaborates with state education leaders, researchers, and professional organizations in directing program evaluation studies and technical assistance projects aimed toward improving the quality of K-12 public education. He holds a Ph.D. from Florida State University and an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dr. Valarie Williams
Dr. Valarie Williams, native of Wilson, North Carolina, is the principal at Fred A. Cochrane Middle School. She is married and has two handsome sons. She believes in "family" and "relationships," her family oriented nature pervades the culture at Cochrane causing the school's environment to be warm and inviting. When thinking of the nature of Cochrane, Dr. Williams always keeps this one thought in mind: "Would I want my child to attend this school?" This is the driving force for the strategies and techniques she implements at Cochrane to assist in quality instruction. As Cochrane's leader, Dr. Williams' background encompasses an array of knowledge and experience that is shared and used to improved the achievement levels of students. She graduated from St. Augustine's College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Math and a minor in Math Education; Dr. Williams began her career as a 7th and 8th grade math teacher for six years. While teaching, she pursued her MBA and EdS in Curriculum and Teaching at East Carolina University before becoming an administrator in Guilford County. Aiming higher educationally, she received her Doctorate of Education at UNC-Greensboro, becoming highly qualified to effectively lead schools to success. Arriving at Cochrane Middle School during the 2007-2008 academic school year, she coined the schools motto, "A 5 Star School Providing 5 Star Service." Dr. Williams upholds this principle by walking in excellence in all that she does and expecting the very best from staff and students. Her vision for Cochrane is welcomed by the staff and serves as an impetus for creating an atmosphere conducive for critical thinking, not only for students but for teachers as well. Dr. Williams brings a strong research based instructional mindset to Cochrane, which restructures the quality of instruction in the classroom. She believes in the instructional paradigm of Interactive Learning, which enables students to learn through exploration and projects, thus causing them to be more active and responsible for their own learning. Ultimately, Dr. Williams has the students' best interest at heart and by the staff members maintaining her vision for the school, the needs of Cochrane students are being met.
Verneda Edwards
Verneda Edwards is currently serving as Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the Blue Valley School District in Overland Park, Kansas. The district serves approximately 21,000 students and 31 schools. Verneda has been a teacher, elementary principal and curriculum director. She brings school improvement experiences from small to large districts. The Blue Valley district has been involved with the school improvement process, including Curriculum Mapping, for six years.
